Adopted Sea Turtle Nest

TURTLE UPDATE:
Last year's 3rd graders upheld the wonderful, STM tradition of adopting a sea turtle as part of
library class. The nest has been laid on Caroline Beach, and here are photos of the eggs and the
volunteers tending them. Please share with your children so they can take a look!

The volunteers and the protected turtles thank you for your work in helping them!

Keep an eye out for updates when the nest hatches!

Sincerely,
Stephanie Pacheco

KB 3 was laid on June 20.  Below are the tracks left by the nesting sea turtle and
the nest left hidden under the sand.  Once volunteers found the nest...

the clutch of eggs was moved to a safer location away from the tideline;

CB 2 was laid on June 22.   Once the top of the nest is found and the nest confirmed

a screen and stakes are placed around the nest to protect it from predators.

You might be interested in knowing that for each nest that is laid, a single egg is
removed for inclusion in a DNA study that is tracking the genealogy and nesting habits
of the Atlantic sea turtles.
