Identifying your personal strengths

Personal strengths are defined as our built-in capacities for particular ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Research in positive psychology has shown us that people who know their strengths and use them frequently tend to feel happier, have better self-esteem, and are more likely to accomplish their goals. However, many people have a hard time identifying their strengths. They see them as ordinary, even when they are not. In order for people to use their strengths effectively, it’s important that they have a clear idea of what they are and how they can be used.

Some examples of personal strengths include creativity, communication, empathy, forgiveness, problem-solving skills, the ability to work hard and stay focused, the ability to learn quickly and adapt, assertiveness, the ability to lead others, organization skills, and excellent time management. Your strengths can be used in school, at work, and in your personal life.
