Counselor's Connection

Every Tuesday, we have the pleasure of having Charley, the Therapy Dog, visit our school. Undoubtedly, the
students, staff, and myself enjoy Charley’s presence. I often hear the students say, “she’s so
fluffy” or she’s so cute!” We are so grateful for Mr. Marty and Mrs. Joyce Suydam for sharing Charley
with us.

Here are some fun facts about Charley:
  • Charley was the smallest of her litter. She came to the Suydam’s with the name “Lambchop” because she
    looked like a lamb.
  • As a Goldendoodle she was bred specifically as a hypoallergenic dog. She is 3/4
standard poodle and 1/4 golden retriever. Because of this she is not only smart and extremely trainable
but very gentle and affectionate and does not shed.
  • At two years old, Charley underwent obedience training then she received specific training required for therapy work in different settings. The Suydam’s also attended the training with Charley and, through the certification process, it was ensured that they know the rules and could handle her in various settings.
  • Charley has worked with students at all levels and has been actively involved in retirement settings and various work places.
  • The Suydams and Charley are bot certified on an annual basis by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
  • Charley is outgoing and loves people. She loves her “work” and gets as much happiness she gives.

During Charley's visit yesterday, Mr. Marty shared that he wrote and published a book called 'Walks with Charley: Sniffing Arlington Ridge History and Mystery.' In this book, he discuss the geography and history of Arlington Ridge.
