SPOTLIGHT: Middle School Math
STM has always prided itself on teaching children based upon data so that they are appropriately challenged and supported. This is readily apparent in younger grades (differentiated reading, math supports built in, etc.), but harder to distinguish within our middle school.
Did you know that we have different math classes available to Middle School students?
Depending on their knowledge in 5th Grade, they have the ability to either enter Traditional or Intensive Math
Prior to entering Intensive Math as a sixth grader, the student will have mastered all Diocesan
Mathematics Curriculum for students in grades Kindergarten through Six. For Placement in
Intensive Math in the sixth grade students must satisfy the following criteria:
a. Math Composite standardized test score National Percentile: 85 or above on the Spring Scantron Performance Series Exam.
b. Class grade in 5th grade math: 93 or above.
c. End of year diocesan comprehensive grade-level test: 85 or above (Recommended time of testing – May of 5th grade year).
d. Favorable teacher and principal recommendation.
At the end of 6th grade, all students take the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test to determine math placement in 7th grade. This way, all students have the opportunity to either move to Traditional Math or Pre-Algebra.
At the end of 7th grade, all traditional and pre-algebra students take the Iowa Algebra aptitude test (except those in 7th grade algebra -- they take the algebra exemption test at a Diocesan high school).
All specific criteria are listed in the parent handbook on pg. 12-14.
