“I’m Bored!”
...and other things my children say over Christmas break.
While I know we are all certainly looking forward to spending time with our loved ones over Christmas, I also am sure I will surpass counting on my fingers AND toes the number of times there is “nothing to do” or “I’m bored” will come out of my three children’s mouths. If your kids are anything like mine, take a look at some fun and non-tech educational activities they can do over break:
- Read a Christmas story--to yourself, your siblings, your pet, your best friend, or a loved one in person or via Zoom!
- Bake or make candy--there is so much inherent math and measuring in the very act of baking and cooking. Our personal favorites are making hot chocolate bombs* and decorating them.
- "Paint” sugar cookies* Discuss the different states of matter as you make the cookies and the icing.
- Make stained glass with paint* or with tissue paper and contact paper*. Tap into that creative side and let them help you decorate the house!
- Make Grinch Slime*
- Play board games--work on social skills, taking turns, and winning and losing gracefully (a really difficult skill regardless of age!)
Of course, it is also amazing how quickly the feeling of boredom vanishes when the answer is, “Great! I’m so glad you’re free to help me clean the baseboards or vacuum the house.” Somehow, there is a toy or game they have forgotten about that suddenly appears and they are too busy to help.
I hope you enjoy your Christmas break and cannot wait to dive into more fun and learning in 2022!
